6,000 Stores to Close as U.S. Retailers Plan for Recession

U.S. retailers are set to take strong action, as a further recession looms on the horizon, by together closing more than 6,000 stores. Not only underperforming stores will face the threat of closure; for example, Office Depot plans to close 400 retail outlets by 2016. Other well-known U.S. brands, such as JCPenney, Macy’s and Abercrombie & Fitch, will also be permanently shutting stores.

In the near future, it is clear that our shopping districts, malls and complexes will have a very different appearance from the one they have today. How long the U.S. remains as the nation with the most retail space per person is anyone’s guess.
